Medaglia d’Oro one to beat Saturday

Arcadia, CA (Sports Network) – Travers Stakes winner Medaglia d’Oro tops a field of six in Saturday’s $400,000 Strub Stakes. The Strub is restricted to four-year-olds and is a prep for the Santa Anita handicap.

Medaglia d’Oro will be making his first start since finishing second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic to Volponi last October. In his last four races last year the colt has two wins and two second-place finishes. Owned by Edmund Gann, Medaglia d’Oro has won four of ten career starts for better than $2.2 million. He will start from the outside post for trainer Bobby Frankel with Jerry Bailey in the saddle.

Easy Grades, the second-place finisher in last year’s Santa Anita Derby, will break from post three with Julie Krone riding. Trained by Ted West, Easy Grades is coming off another second-place finish early in January in an allowance. That race was the first for Easy Grades since undergoing throat surgery.

The entire field in the 1 1/8 mile race from the rail out is Olmodavor, Castle Gandolfo, Easy Grades, Tracemark, Pass Rush and Medaglia d’Oro.
